Message from Lu Olo in respect of the 2007 Presidential Elections in Timor-Leste

(Translation from Tetum to English)

I would like to congratulate Jose Ramos Horta on winning the election to become President of the Republic of Timor-Leste. I would like to salute him as the elected Head of State who will commence his functions in accordance with the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste as the guarantor of national unity and national independence.

I congratulate and salute the electorate of Timor- Leste which chose the new President of the Republic.

On behalf of the FRETILIN party, I would like to pass the message of the people’s wish to live in peace and security and that all citizens distance themselves from the violence and crime. Acceptance of the result signifies that we respect the democratic principles. It also signifies that we should support each other to improve the livelihood of the people and to secure peace and stability in our country.

Finally, I would like to thank my supporters and my family for the fervent support that they have given to me. It has been a great honour to be the presidential candidate of a great political institution such as FRETILIN, an institution that has always defended and will always defend Timor-Leste’s independence, the constitution and the rule of law.
